Cheebu updates

I have been meaning to do this post for long now. Cheebu is fast learning and doing many things and I would like to record them here for memory. Β Starting with school, we attended the first PTM for this year a few weeks back. The first thing that her teacher said as soon as she saw us was “She is talking, talking and talking all the time” πŸ™‚ and we told the teacher that she is talking, talking and talking at home too all the time πŸ™‚ But apart from that she is attentive in class and actively participates in all activities. Contrary to last year when she started school and would cry in class on days when her best friend from daycare didn’t turn up to school, this year she is quite comfortable in class. The teacher said her confidence has increased a lot and we were quite happy and relieved to hear this. Thankfully, her school is one of those that does not put much pressure of academics on the little ones at this age. They do have some assessments but no exams. She is learning to write the small letters of the English alphabet now. I guess she is also learning some phonics because she has been showing interest in spellings and asks us to spell words. So we play this fun game with her where I ask her to spell simple words and she tries to figure it out based on her knowledge of phonics. So if I ask her to spell “STAR” and she figures out “STR”, I Β am quite happy because she is applying logic. But english as you know is a funny language πŸ™‚ So when I tell her to spell NOSE, she says NOZ and try as I might to tell her it is NOSE, she doesn’t agree because S says “s” not “z” *sigh* Anyway I give up, since spelling words is not being taught in school at present. She is also learning to write the Hindi alphabets.

In maths, she has been taught to write upto 10 so far though she can count upto 100. Here I must mention that she learnt all that counting sitting for potty πŸ™‚ . Having finished her potty she would call me for cleaning and me doing something or the other at that time would ask her to count. So gradually she learnt to count till 10, 20 and finally now she can count upto 100. One day she surprised us by writing the numbers from 1 to 100 Β too on the white board. No, we didn’t ask her to write, she did it on her own and we were truly surprised to see that she could do it. And no, we have not been teaching her. I was so impressed, I had to take a picture πŸ™‚

And this weekend she expressed her interest to learn addition and subtraction. So hubby went ahead and taught her addition and gave her a small problem sheet and she did it πŸ™‚ I then taught her subtraction. That evening I got her a workbook on maths and she is enjoying doing it πŸ™‚

Cheebu loves to draw and here the white board in our house is turning out to be quite useful. She loves to draw on it for fun. Here are some of her drawings on the white board πŸ™‚

Talking of drawing, she loves to draw and is good at it. However she hates toΒ color. Apart from drawing on the white board, she has filled pages of her drawing book withΒ scribblingΒ and drawings, but she refuses toΒ colorΒ them. Here is a drawing that she made on Janmashtami: Balram, Krishna and Radha with the dahi handi hanging up. The flowers near their feet are Rangoli.

Here is a rare drawing that she actually coloured. Did you notice that everything including the sun, clouds and bees have smiley faces? πŸ™‚

I have always been scared of giving waterΒ colorsΒ to Cheebu because of the mess she creates. Yes, I know “daag achchhe hain” πŸ™‚ but still. Then one day hubby decided to do some painting with her. This is what they made together.

That afternoon Cheebu wanted to do some painting on her own. This is what she made. She did create a mess but I am happy that at least with water colors, she is interested in coloring.

And then one day, Cheebu and I did some Madhubani style painting inspired by Shruti’s blog.

Among other things, we have been having lots of fun with the playdough πŸ™‚ Apart from the icecreams that we had made, we have been doing lots of other interesting things with playdough with Cheebu.

She has also started Β learning to play the keyboard recently. We have joined her in Keyboard classes, twice a week at her daycare. I met her teacher after the third class and she was all praises for her. She says that Cheebu is picking up fast and doing well. However she is moody and refuses to practice at home. But as long as she is enjoying it I am okay with it.

Another thing worth mentioning here is her love for stories, both listening as well as making and narrating them πŸ™‚ But that is a post on its own.

On a completely different note, it is hubby’s birthday today. But since yesterday was a holiday we celebrated it yesterday itself. I made Biryani, Corn paalak and rajma for lunch while hubby made some spicy green chutney. Cheebu made a nice card for him and Β in the evening Cheebu and I baked a nice chocolate cake and some cup cakes. We also decorated the cake with some fresh cream and colorful sugar balls πŸ™‚

Cheebu wanted the cake to be a big surprise for her papa and she kept telling him the we are going to make a nice surprise cake for you πŸ˜€

  1. Wow, I am really really really big time impressed πŸ™‚
Cheebu actually shows interest in learning things!!!! It is a win-win situation..where she learns because she wants to learn and gets happy and you too get happy because she is learning!!!
You guys are so multi-talented!!! And that cake looks absolutely yummy!!! you used fresh cream for frosting!?! How did you stop it from dropping? did it get stiff?
Please share how did you do it!!!

    • Yes ZM, she does show interest in learning “somethings” and there we do try to encourage her πŸ™‚ But she is very moody..
With the fresh cream, I just whipped it and kept it in the freezer (it was already sweetened, so didn’t have to add sugar) then cooled the cake and then tried to do the frosting. It did drip a bit but not much since it was a bit frozen. If you see the cake closely, the finishing is not very good. After that I kept it in the fridge again and by morning the cream had set nicely.

  2. Super cute….Love the idea of having a white board at home to let Cheebu draw and write whenever and whatever she likes πŸ™‚

Yes, the white board is proving to be quite useful πŸ™‚ You know, in a few months time you could get a magnetic slate for Pari. She’ll love it πŸ™‚ Cheebu started her drawing and writing mostly on the magnetic slate when she was younger.
The play dough art work was done together with us πŸ™‚
Will pass on your hugs πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  8. I LOVED this post for various reasons.

    1. Cheebu is such an adorable darling. Her interest in Maths and drawing and keyboard is quite impressive.
    2. I love the idea of having a white board at home. It would be of so much value to children and would go a long way towards unleashing their creativity.
    3. I loved the way you and your hubby work together towards educating Cheebu. God bless!
    4. LOVED the cake, and the description of the food that you made for your hubby’s birthday had me drooling. Please to share the recipe for the biryani! I am really looking for a simple recipe for tasty biryani.
    5. LOL at ‘baking a nice surprise cake for you’. Kids!

PS: Wish hubby a very happy birthday from me, will you?

    • Thank you TGND πŸ™‚
We always thought she was interested in drawing and music. Maths is a recent thing. Don’t know how far it will go.
The white board is certainly turning out to be a very useful thing πŸ™‚
Biryani, I tried making it for the first time. Will share the recipe here or else will mail it to you πŸ™‚

  9. And, oh, loved the things you have created out of Playdoh. That banana looks so real, and the monkey is super cute!

I love the concept of introducing children to Playdoh, too. It can unleash their creativity, too.

Love the Madhubani fish. Totally awesome it is!

Your posts give me pointers on what I should do with my kids in future.

    • Play dough is certainly a fun activity to do with kids πŸ™‚ When I was small I used to ask my mom for the kneaded atta to play with when she was making rotis. You should see Artsycraftsymom.com for craft ideas with kids. She has a whole lot of lovely ideas πŸ™‚

  10. Super-mom has a super-kid πŸ™‚

Loved each and every update on Cheebu..she is so disciplined…which brings me to admire your parenting as well as her daycare teacher’s skills.

    • Arre no super mom or super kid πŸ™‚ Lots of kids of Cheebu’s age do all this and more πŸ™‚
      Thank you πŸ™‚
If you come to our house you will know how disciplined she is πŸ˜‰
And I would certainly put in a good word for her daycare teachers who plan lovely activities for the kids there to nurture their creativity πŸ™‚

  11. Cheebu is a true star re.. her sketches are too good.. she is an born artist.. encourage her a lot.. πŸ™‚
happy b’day to ur hubby.. super surprise.. πŸ™‚

  12. WOw….mighty impressed πŸ™‚ You have an intelligent and smart kiddo there. Lots of love.
Loved each creation and effort. Kudos to you too for raising her so well.
And Yes – Belated Happy Birthday to your hubby. That cake looks delicious too.

  13. I am amazed! She does all that? She is quite artistically inclined, I think. My daughter likes painting and crafts too but will never consent to me sitting with her and teaching her stuff, especially painting and craft, she must do it her way. Loved all the stuff you have put up! Haha, kidspeak on surprise cake. Wish you guys a happy celebration!

    • She does it only when she is in mood to do… not always πŸ™‚ Cheebu normally likes to involve us in whatever she does … she is very attention seeking… though drawing she does on her own. Maybe with time she will become more independent too … doing things her way.
Thank you πŸ™‚ We did have a nice celebration πŸ™‚
